In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the darkest day of the year preceding the gradual return of sunlight. These photographs represent to me the Winter Solstice based on their shadows and light found in serene, natural places around the world. An enchanting, fairy tale theme park located on Route 40 in Ellicott City, Maryland. Opened in 1955, I visited the park as a child during the 1970’s with my then best friend Connie. Her father took us there for a day trip from Bethesda, Maryland. At the time, traveling to Ellicott City seemed like such a long way to a faraway place, but this added to the excitement. The park was a forest filled space with fairy tale themed structures nestled among the trees. Cinderella, Mother Goose, Jack and the Beanstalk were just a few of the characters dwelling here.
Sadly, forty years later all that remains of The Enchanted Forest is the entrance and a lonely ice cream cottage. The park has been replaced with a shopping center and more development is planned to erase what remains of the park.
Thankfully many of the fairy tale structures were acquired by the Clark’s Farm a petting farm located nearby on Route 108 and is open to the public. http://www.clarklandfarm.com/
